Science and education in the spotlight at YOURS

YOURS Committee Members Chantal Dysli, Elon Van Dijk and Kristina Pfau pinpoint some of the highlights of this year’s programme

With its traditional mix of high-quality science, education and entertainment, the Young Retina Specialists (YOURS) Day being held on Saturday 7 October promises to be one of the highlights of the EURETINA Congress in Amsterdam.

This year’s programme features a first-rate symposium, a science slam, a mystery cases session and a keynote Ophthalmologica lecture.

“We are very happy with the programme that we have put together for Amsterdam. We have some excellent speakers addressing some of the most important topics in the field of retina,” said Chantal Dysli MD, PhD.

Although YOURS was established in 2013, to represent the interests of younger members under 40 years of age, the appeal of the YOURS Day extends to all age groups and offers interesting perspectives even for more experienced retinal specialists.

“The YOURS programme exclusively includes speakers under 40 years of age with marked expertise within their field of research or clinics. We mainly hope to welcome young conference participants including clinicians and researchers, but all age groups are warmly welcome and will benefit from the quality presentations on offer,” added Elon Van Dijk, MD, PhD, FEBOphth.

For this year’s event in Amsterdam, the goal, as in previous years, is to offer a varied programme that covers a broad spectrum of the latest ground-breaking research in the field of retina. The YOURS symposium enables experienced researchers to present their research projects, providing insight into the most recent knowledge and developments in the field of ophthalmology.

In the mystery cases session, presenters introduce a case study or a rare problem and the audience is invited to suggest a diagnosis or course of action based on the evidence presented. A less formal approach to presenting data and research is encouraged in the popular science slam session which has become a regular feature of the YOURS programme.

Another highlight of the YOURS programme will be the Ophthalmologica lecture, which will be given this year by Maximillian Pfau MD, PhD.

“I am really looking forward to Dr Pfau’s lecture entitle Beyond Atrophy: Investigating the Leading Disease Front”. During his talk, he will dive into this relevant and challenging topic of finding outcome measures to target diseases prior to cell death,” said Dr Dysli.

Young retinal specialists can also avail of a range of educational opportunities at the Congress, points out Kristina Pfau MD, PhD.

“The EBO Retina Subspecialty course is part of a curriculum over 2 years with an excellent overview of the main fields of the exam, such as inherited retinal diseases, myopia, tumours, AMD/CSC and uveitis. It will include talks by senior and junior experts in this field, combined with example questions and cases to discuss,” she said.
