The congress is only one part of what EURETINA offers. Between meetings, free educational content and a range of grants, programmes and communities keep the retina community connected.
When the final session closes in Vienna, EURETINA’s work carries on. As a non-profit organisation, the society reinvests all its funds into educational benefits for members and into retina research that benefits ophthalmology patients worldwide. The annual Congress, the Winter Meeting and the online resources sit at the centre of that approach, supported by a wider set of opportunities for those building their careers.
Free to everyone
The Open Content library gathers a selection of EURETINA’s educational resources that are free for everyone, with membership opening up the full digital library. It spans videos, articles, podcasts, abstracts, case club cases, sessions on demand and satellite symposia, organised across digital events, Ophthalmologica and EURETINA Eye to Eye.
The Talking EURETINA podcast is a good place to start. Episodes tied to this year’s congress include David Steel on why surgeons choose different tamponades, ahead of his Ingrid Kreissig Lecture, and a conversation on central serous chorioretinopathy ahead of the Ophthalmologica Lecture. Past President Frank Holz also discusses dry AMD and his career ahead of his own lecture, and further episodes cover masquerade syndromes, geographic atrophy endpoints and AI in diabetic retinopathy.
Other open-access material includes the EuroVeRsion Case Competition webinar, which showcases the videos of the selected semi-finalists, and the YOURS Case Club.
Funding research
The annual Retinal Medicine Research Funding Call, established in 2018, offers the Retinal Medicine Clinical Research Award, with grants of up to €300,000 for independent clinical research. EURETINA focuses on work that other funders, including the pharmaceutical industry, do not typically support. On occasion it backs larger programmes too, such as the ongoing EURETINA Submacular Hemorrhage Trial, run in partnership with Fight for Sight. Queries go to [email protected].
Supporting the next generation
YOURS, the Young Retina Specialists initiative, was established in 2013 to represent members under 40. It is one of the main ways EURETINA encourages younger ophthalmologists in their retina careers, and it offers three years of free membership. Each year the Ophthalmologica Lecture is awarded at the YOURS Symposium to an outstanding young European clinician-scientist.
For trainees, the Observership Grant Programme offers €1,500 grants to up to ten members a year.
Mentoring and Women in Retina
Through the Mentorship Programme, supported by Roche, EURETINA pairs promising retina specialists with experienced mentors early in their careers. The programme has now grown into a global alumni network. Applicants must be members.
The Women in Retina initiative, sponsored by Bayer, is a leadership programme that includes fellowships and annual grants for women under 40. The Women in Retina Survey 2026 revisits the original 2021 study, and participation from women and men alike is essential to measuring real progress.
