8 Exam Leaders join Prof Nicole Eter and Prof Jens Folke Kiilgaard as FEBOS-R (Hon) Awardees

At the Opening Ceremony of the 25th Euretina Congress in 2025, the European Board of Ophthalmology and Euretina recognised and celebrated the outstanding contributions of Prof Nicole Eter (University Hospital Münster, Germany, and Chair of the EBO-Euretina Exam Working Group) and Prof Jens Folke Kiilgaard (University of Copenhagen, Denmark, and Member of the EBO-Euretina Exam Working Group) by awarding them the honorary FEBOS-R diploma and title.

Their vision and leadership successfully brought the FEBOS-R exam from concept to reality, and has ensured its continued success for nearly half a decade. Prof Eter created a leadership structure to develop the curriculum, create a blueprint, and engage expert examiners. Prof Kiilgaard bolstered these efforts with key contributions to process and exam development, as well as assessment approaches. Their work has laid the foundation for a certification that will support the next generation of retina specialists and strengthen international recognition of advanced retina expertise.

In 2026, they will be joined by 8 leaders of the FEBOS-R Exam, who have managed examiners and the development of assessment content for the 8 subspecialty sections of the exam:

  • Prof Camiel Boon (Amsterdam UMC, Netherlands), for AMD/ CSC
  • Prof Louise O’Toole (Mater Misericordia University Hospital, Ireland), for Imaging
  • Prof Elisabetta Pilotto (University of Padova, Italy), for Diabetes and Vascular Eye Disease
  • Prof Sofia Androudi (University of Thessaly, Greece), for Uveitis
  • Ms Hibba Quhill (Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, UK), for Tumours
  • Prof Maximilian Pfau (University of Bonn, Germany), for IRD
  • Prof David Gaucher (University of Strasbourg, France), for Myopia
  • Ms Roxane Hillier (Newcastle Hospitals NHS Trust, UK), for VR

This new cohort of FEBOS-R (Hon) awardees have spent countless hours organising and managing examiners for their subspecialty area, developing exam questions, undertaking standard setting exercises and creating standardised clinical cases used in the viva voce section of the exam.

EBO and EURETINA congratulates all FEBOS-R (Hon) recipients on this well-deserved recognition and expresses its gratitude for their dedication to advancing retina education and certification in Europe.

About the EBO-Euretina (FEBOS-R) Examination

The FEBOS-R exam takes place in two parts: an online MCQ section in June, followed by an interview-based viva voce, which takes place on the Wednesday before the Euretina congress opens. Candidates must pass Part I to proceed to Part II. It is a challenging exam, with less than 50% passing in the same year of initial application.  Euretina allows one resit for those who do not pass, at a reduced registration fee. You can learn more about the FEBOS-R exam (including application process, fees and content) at the Euretina and EBO websites.

The FEBOS-R is one of five subspecialty certifications offered by the EBO and European Subspecialty societies. You can learn more about all subspecialty exams on the EBO website.
