Young surgeons showcase skills in 10th EuroVeRsion video contest

Live Reaction

2025 marked the tenth year of the EuroVeRsion International surgical video case contest. Entrants into the competition are nominated by a senior vitreoretinal surgeon, must be <40 years of age, in the first three years of their career, and have participated in the case featured in their 3-minute video.

During an enjoyable and interactive Friday afternoon session at the Euretina meeting, the six finalists in this year’s contest presented their videos and competed for the EuroVeRsion Jury and Audience prizes by answering questions from a panel comprised of leading vitreoretinal surgeons. Chosen from a group of 10 semi-finalists during a webinar held earlier this year, the six finalists were Dr. Jamil Poletti (Peru), Dr. Marcos Restrepo (Colombia), Dr. Ginerva Adamo (Italy), Dr. Mai Alhelahy (Egypt), Dr. Filipe Sousa Neves (Portugal), and Dr. Yuxi Zheng (USA).

The contestants’ responses to the experts’ questions along with consideration of video quality, scientific/clinical value, and take-home messages were incorporated into the judges’ decision for awarding the EuroVeRsion Jury Prize.  The winner was Dr. Poletti whose video was titled “Zero gravity in the vitreous cavity”. Dr. Alhelahy was the second place winner. Her video was titled “Never give up!! IOFB with endophthalmitis”, and Dr Adamo received the third place award for her video “Endophthalmitis associated with corneal ulcer in a patient with previous radial keratotomy.”

Two Audience Prizes were awarded – one based on subjective audience reaction and the other on online voting. Dr Restropo, who showed a video titled “Assailing disaster: Imaging failed to warn us”, received the award based on audience reaction. Dr. Adamo was the winner based on the online voting results.

This session will be available on demand for all registered attendees. View the session here. Please allow 24 hours from the end of session.
