RETINAWS: When the going gets tough, the tough get going

Delegates filling the auditorium on Friday morning for the RETINAWS session were rewarded with a valuable learning experience as top surgeons from around the world presented and discussed surgical videos showcasing complex and challenging vitreoretinal surgery, rare situations, and unique surgical techniques.

The session started, however, with course director Dr Kourous Rezaei (United States) showing a moving video paying tribute to Dr Ramin Tadayoni (France), Euretina’s president who passed away suddenly in April this year.

“A great friend and a giant in our field passed away, but his legacy continues,” said Dr Rezaei. “This video celebrates the life of a friend who is a global legend in the world of retina.”

The educational session included multiple videos that were presented in 3D, thus providing a real-world experience to delegates in the audience. The first surgical video was shown by Dr José García-Arumí (Spain) who showcased a challenging case of managing myopic macular hole.

Next, Dr Stratos Gotzaridis (Greece) presented an interesting video demonstrating the management of a patient with stretched macula. A second video from Dr Gotzaridis showcased an unpleasant surprise during vitrectomy surgery.

Dr Patricia Udaondo Mirete (Spain) presented the management of a macular hole in a highly myopic patient using autologous enriched platelet serum. Dr Stanislao Rizzo (Italy) presented his approach to managing a challenging case of a longstanding retinal detachment.

Dr Anat Lowenstein (Israel) showed a case of a very dense cataract where intervention was needed after the cataract surgeon used a fragmatome to address dropped nucleus.

Dr Ehab El Rayes (Egypt) presented a video showing the elegant management of myopic maculoschisis.

A video from Dr Kazuaki Kadonosono (Japan) showed repair of a complex case of retinal detachment in an eye that had cortical remnants from a previously performed cataract surgery.

Dr Sengul Ozdek (Turkey) presented the challenges associated with a macular hole that developed during the surgical management of persistent fetal vasculature in an infant.

Dr Mario Romano (Italy) presented his surgical approach to avoid slippage when managing a giant retinal tear detachment.
