Baroness Greenfield will present the Diversity Keynote Lecture at 09:00 in room 116/117 on Saturday, 21 September.

Susan Greenfield, CBE is a neuroscientist, writer and broadcaster. She is also CEO of Neuro-Bio Ltd, which is a privately owned biotech company spun out of Oxford University that has a therapeutic focus on neurodegenerative disease and is working to develop new drugs to treat Alzheimer’s disease along with a biomarker for presymptomatic diagnosis. Attendees at Saturday morning’s keynote lecture on diversity will hear a discussion of diversity from a somewhat different perspective as Baroness Susan Greenfield presents her lecture titled “The Neuroscience of Individuality”.

In her lecture, Baroness Greenfield will point out that humans thrive in more diverse environments than any other species because the human brain has an exceptional ability to adapt.  

“Although the brain is a generic and standardised part of the human body, it becomes highly individualised after birth through the formation of unique connections between brain cells. This process transforms the brain into a ‘mind’ that is constantly interacting with its surroundings,” Baroness Greenfield said.

Observing that the 21st Century is transforming our environment in unprecedented ways, Baroness Greenfield will posit the idea that the human brain and consequently our minds could also be undergoing unprecedented changes that could challenge one’s sense of individuality. 

Against this background, Baroness Greenfield will explore in her talk the threats and opportunities for nurturing a strong, unique identity and embracing new forms of diversity.
