Organised by EURETINA as a biennial event, World Retina Day (Saturday 21st September) serves as a platform for international collaboration, where retina specialists, other ophthalmologists and healthcare professionals, and researchers working in a variety of settings  and coming from around the world gather to share insights and hear from leading experts in the field. 

Participants will benefit from networking opportunities that foster connections, partnerships, and collaborative efforts to address the challenges of retinal health. EURETINA World Retina Day highlights the importance of global cooperation in advancing research, improving patient care, and tackling retinal diseases on a worldwide scale. This global initiative focuses on enhancing awareness and understanding of retinal diseases, and it features over 20 sessions with participation from key national societies and international organisations.

“EURETINA is a leader in the field of retina and understands the value that comes from working together with retina specialists and other retina societies from all over the world. As a feature at our annual meeting every second year, World Retina Day provides a platform for this collaboration. We find this event very rewarding both for EURETINA and other societies within and outside Europe,” said Prof Anat Loewenstein, MD, MHA, EURETINA President. 

The World Retina Day sessions are taking place throughout the day on Saturday. The 1-hour sessions are being held from 9:00-10:00, 11:30-12:30, 15:30-16:30, and 16:45-17:45, and delegates can choose to attend from among 4 different sessions during each time block. 

The sessions cover a range of topics with some having a specific focus and others featuring presentations on a variety of issues. Diabetic eye disease is the main topic for multiple World Retina Day sessions. Other specific conditions that are topics for World Retina Day sessions include polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, retinal detachment, ocular trauma, lamellar macular holes, and pachychoroid/central serous chorioretinopathy.  Sessions on artificial intelligence, biomarkers for ocular and extraocular diseases, and research methodology for retinal specialists are also part of the World Retina Day programme.

World Retina Day will be celebrated on Saturday, September 21, at the 2024 EURETINA Congress.
